Everyone Has a Story
I believe that everyone has a story to tell, as well as the untapped creative potential to turn that story into art. In this 90-minute presentation and workshop, which can be tailored for kids in the middle school or high school age groups, I introduce students to the storytellers within themselves. With prompts and examples from my own songwriting process, we work together to find inspiration, learn about lyrical structure, and condense their stories into three-minute pieces. This presentation also includes a basic introduction to coming up with a melody, but the main focus is upon honing a lyrical creative skill.
Music History: Women Songwriters of the 1970s
The 1970s led to the birth of modern feminism, and the political climate of the time gave rise to many talented women songwriters. In this hour-long presentation, I introduce high school and adult audiences to the women's movement of the 1970s and its effect upon the music scene of the time. This will be done through a hybrid of lecture and my own renditions of songs by musicians such as Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Janice Ian, and Carly Simon, performed live.
Music Heals: Music as a means to allow ourselves to grieve and heal
My latest album, which will be released in late summer, 2019, is all about the people I have lost, and what they taught me. I have lost a husband, a father, a mother, grandparents, an elderly aunt. The songs I wrote about them have helped me realize what they brought to my life, and have allowed me to grieve and move forward. These songs are reflective presentations of relationships. In this talk, I tell my stories and share my songs of the important people in my life who have passed on, and the lessons they are still sharing with me.
